The great thing about homeschool is you can start teaching your child whenever you’d like.

With that said, you want to keep in mind that pushing your child too fast too soon can create a negative impact on them long term.

Take these 3 things into consideration when starting your homeschool journey:
  • How kids learn best.
  • How your child learns best.
  • How long learning time should be.
Watch and listen to your child and make your daily decisions based on that.

HOW CHILDREN LEARN BEST

Most young kids learn best through play.

If you are sitting your child down with worksheets and your child is hating it, you may need to "deschool" yourself!

DESCHOOLING

We all have this image in our heads of what school looks like. That setup exists because there are is a large group of kids and one teacher.

Most of us choose to homeschool because of the many benefits homeschooling brings our children and our family.  So, we can't look at homeschooling the same way we look at traditional school.

We have to get that “school” image out of our head and make our homeschool experience our own.

HOW YOUR CHILD LEARNS BEST

Like I said earlier, MOST kids learn best through play.  Your child might love the worksheets and that’s okay.  This is why it’s important to pay attention to your child and lean into what he or she likes.

I like to look at the VARK learning styles. They are the most basic.

Visual
Auditory
Reading
Kinesthetic

HOW MANY HOURS IS LEARNING TIME?

Remember that kids have a very short attention span.  Don’t get too invested in an activity or too invested in the idea that school will run for 3 hours straight.

For example, you might rotate household chores and school work throughout the day.  Don’t forget to incorporate play time with other kids every week.  Socializing is a huge learning experience for kids.
