Here is a fun and easy little science activity you can do with your kids.

DIY Lava Lamps!!

This can be a visual activity or you can get into the science part of it.

With this activity, you can talk about density and chemical reactions.

DENSITY
As you pour in the water, oil and food coloring, ask your child what they are seeing.  He or she will see what liquids are more dense than other liquids.

What liquid is at the bottom?
What liquid is at the top?
What liquid is in the middle?
CHEMICAL REACTION
Explain to your child that when he or she drops the Alka Seltzer into the water, it is going to create a gas called carbon dioxide.  This reaction creates the bubbles that you will see.  The bubbles will carry the water and food coloring to the top of the oil, the bubbles will pop and the water and food coloring will fall back down to the bottom of the oil where it will again meet with the Alka Seltzer, creating more bubbles.
All you need is:
  • Large cup
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Food coloring
  • Alka Seltzer
What to do:
  • Fill 2/3 of the cup with oil.
  • Fill the rest with water.
  • Drop in food coloring.
  • Drop in one Alka Seltzer tablet

Watch and learn!
