Rainbows are one of nature’s most magical sights! Preschoolers are naturally curious about these colorful arcs in the sky, and learning about rainbows can be both fun and educational. In this post, we’ll explore how to find a rainbow, how to make a rainbow, and other exciting rainbow facts that will delight young learners.

How to Find a Rainbow
Rainbows appear when sunlight shines through raindrops in the air. This usually happens after a rainstorm when the sun comes out while it’s still sprinkling.

Here’s how you and your preschooler can spot a real rainbow:
  • Look after a rain shower – The best time to see a rainbow is when the sun comes out after the rain.
  • Face away from the sun – Stand with your back to the sun and look towards the rain.
  • Find a misty area – Sometimes, you can even see small rainbows near waterfalls, sprinklers, or garden hoses.
  • Morning and late afternoon are best – The sun needs to be at the right angle for a rainbow to appear, so early and late in the day are ideal times to look.
How to Make a Rainbow
If you can’t find a rainbow outside, don’t worry! You can create your own rainbow with a few simple activities:

1. Make a Rainbow with a Glass of Water
What You Need:
  • A clear glass of water
  • A piece of white paper
  • A sunny window
Steps:
  • Fill the glass with water and place it in direct sunlight.
  • Hold the white paper under the glass.
  • Watch as a rainbow appears on the paper! The water bends the light, creating a rainbow.
2. Make a Rainbow with a Hose
What You Need:
Steps:
  • Stand with your back to the sun.
  • Turn on the hose and spray a fine mist into the air.
  • Look for a rainbow in the mist! The tiny water droplets bend the sunlight, making a colorful arc.
3. Make a Rainbow with a CD
What You Need:
Steps:
  • Hold the CD under a light source.
  • Tilt it until you see rainbow colors appear on the surface.
  • Talk to your preschooler about how the CD reflects and bends the light, just like raindrops do in the sky!

Fun Rainbow Facts for Preschoolers
  • A rainbow has seven colors – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.
  • No two people see the same rainbow – Everyone sees a rainbow slightly differently because of where they are standing.
  • Rainbows are round – We usually see an arc, but from an airplane, a rainbow can look like a full circle!
  • You can’t touch a rainbow – It looks like it's in one place, but it's actually made of light and moves with you.

Rainbow-Themed Activities for Preschoolers
Want to extend the learning? Try these fun rainbow activities:

  • Rainbow Scavenger Hunt – Find objects around the house or outside that match the colors of a rainbow.
  • Rainbow Craft – Use tissue paper or finger paint to create a colorful rainbow.
  • Skittles Rainbow Science – Arrange Skittles in a circle on a plate and slowly pour warm water in the center. Watch as the colors spread out like a rainbow!
Rainbows bring wonder and excitement to little learners, and with these simple activities, you can bring the magic of rainbows right into your home or classroom.

Have fun exploring and creating rainbows with your preschooler!
