Looking for a fun, colorful, and easy craft to do with your preschooler? This Fruit Loop Rainbow Craft is the perfect hands-on activity for little learners! Using simple materials, kids can create their own edible rainbow while strengthening their fine motor skills. Plus, it's a great way to talk about colors, patterns, and even a little weather science with the fluffy marshmallow clouds at the end!
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Fruit Loops cereal
- Large marshmallows
- Craft pipe cleaner (any color, but white or blue work well)
How to Make a Fruit Loop Rainbow
- Prep Your Materials – Set out a bowl of Fruit Loops, a pipe cleaner, and two large marshmallows for each child.
- Sort the Colors – Encourage your child to separate the Fruit Loops by color before starting. This is a great way to practice color recognition!
- String the Rainbow – Let your child thread the Fruit Loops onto the pipe cleaner in rainbow order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). If they want to create a unique pattern, that’s great too!
- Add the Clouds – Once the pipe cleaner is nearly full, push a large marshmallow onto each end. These will be the clouds that hold up the rainbow.
- Bend into an Arch – Carefully bend the pipe cleaner into a rainbow shape so that the marshmallow clouds rest flat on the table.
- Admire & Enjoy! – Let your preschooler marvel at their colorful creation. If you’re okay with it, they can even have a little snack when they’re done!
Learning Benefits of This Activity
✔ Fine Motor Skills – Threading the Fruit Loops helps strengthen little fingers.
✔ Color Recognition & Patterns – Kids can practice sorting and sequencing colors.
✔ Hand-Eye Coordination – Stringing the cereal improves coordination.
✔ Simple STEM Connection – Introduce the idea that rainbows appear when sunlight passes through raindrops, and clouds are made of tiny water droplets!
Extend the Fun!
- Read a Rainbow Book
- Rainbow Hunt – Go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find objects in all the rainbow colors.
- Marshmallow Cloud Experiment – Place a marshmallow in the microwave for a few seconds and watch it puff up!
This Fruit Loop Rainbow Craft is a perfect rainy-day activity, St. Patrick’s Day project, or a fun way to celebrate spring. Let your little one’s creativity shine as they build their own rainbow and enjoy some hands-on learning along the way!
Happy crafting!
