Introduce your preschoolers to the letter "T" with this hands-on turkey craft that combines creativity with a fun phonics lesson. Perfect for the Thanksgiving season, this activity will help your child learn the "T" sound while crafting their own adorable turkey friend.
WHAT YOU NEED:
WHAT TO DO:
Trace and Cut Out the Handprint
Place your child’s hand on the brown paper and trace around it to create the turkey’s body.
Cut out the handprint shape – the fingers will be the "feathers" of your turkey!
Create the Capital 'T' with Popsicle Sticks
Help your child glue two popsicle sticks vertically to the handprint to create the stem of the "T."
Then, glue two sticks horizontally across the top to complete the "T" shape. This becomes both the turkey's frame and a visual of the capital letter "T."
Add the Turkey’s Face
Cut out a small triangle from the yellow paper for the beak.
Cut out a wobbly, rounded shape from the red paper to create the turkey's snood (the little red bit that hangs over the beak).
Glue the beak and snood onto the popsicle sticks, and add googly eyes.
Practice Lowercase 't'
Use two extra popsicle sticks to form a lowercase "t," which will help your child see and understand the difference between the uppercase "T" and lowercase "t."
Talk About the Letter 'T'
As your child works on their turkey, talk with them about the letter "T." Make the "T" sound together and encourage them to think of other words that start with "T," like "tree," "toy," and, of course, "turkey!"
Learning Points
- Letter Recognition: This activity teaches the shape of both uppercase and lowercase "T."
- Sound Association: Reinforce the "T" sound by practicing it together and finding words with the "T" sound.
- Fine Motor Skills: Tracing, cutting, and gluing help your child strengthen fine motor skills.
- Creativity and Fun: Crafting their own turkey lets kids exercise creativity while learning!
Display the turkey so your child can proudly show off their creation and remember the letter "T" each time they see it.
Happy crafting!
