The first step in anyone’s homeschool journey is to figure out their child’s learning style.  A learning style is how your child processes, comprehends and retains information.

Throw out the image of a teacher standing in front of a chalkboard as being the only way to teach your child.

This, to me, is one of the biggest benefits to homeschooling.  We have the opportunity customize our child's school experience so that they will excel.

Today we are going to talk about VARK.  There are many other learning styles, but today we are going to focus on VARK.

VARK stands for:
  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Reading/Writing
  • Kinesthetic

Visual
Visual learners learn by seeing.  They need to see assignments explained with drawings or work on assignments that are visually appealing.

Your child might be a visual learner if he or she likes:
  • Drawing
  • Worksheets with pictures
  • Patterns
  • Colors
  • Shapes
  • Creative activities
  • Graphs
  • Picturesque language
  • Watching visually appealing videos
  • Books with pictures

Auditory
Auditory learners learn by hearing.  They need to hear information.  These learners may talk to themselves as they work through problems.  They may ask obvious questions or repeat themselves.

Your child might be a auditory learner if he or she likes:
  • Music and singing
  • Talking and discussing
  • Self-talk
  • Audio books

Reading/Writing
These learners learn best by reading and writing.

Your child might learn best by reading and writing if he or she likes:
  • Books
  • Worksheets
  • Tracing
  • Writing
  • Letter and number practice

Kinesthetic
Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing.  They need to experience what they are learning by touching or even tasting.

Your child might be a Kinesthetic learner if he or she likes:
  • Using their hands
  • Learning about real life topics
  • Field trips
  • Science experiments
  • Building
  • Working in groups
Vark-Learn.com has a "Questionnaire for Younger People" but it is too advanced for preschool aged kids.

These four learning styles are pretty basic and it should be fairly easy for you to determine which learning style your child favors.
