The 4th of July is such a fun holiday to celebrate with little ones. With all the colors, fireworks, and family fun, it’s a great chance to mix in a little learning, too. Here are some easy 4th of July activities for preschoolers that you can do at home!
How to Teach Preschoolers About the 4th of July
When talking about the 4th of July with preschoolers, keep it simple! Here’s an easy way to explain it:
The 4th of July is America’s birthday.
It’s the day we celebrate that our country became free.
People celebrate with fireworks, parades, and red, white, and blue decorations.
We can be thankful for the people who helped make our country free.
Try to connect it to things they know: “Just like we celebrate your birthday with fun and cake, we celebrate our country’s birthday with fun and fireworks!”

Here are some fun and simple activities that preschoolers can enjoy:
Star Sorting Flag Craft

For this simple peppermint science experiment, all you need is a red and white peppermint candy, a small plate, and warm water. Place the peppermint in the center of the plate and gently pour warm water over it until it’s just covered.
Watch as the red color begins to dissolve, creating swirling patterns in the water.
The warm water helps break down the sugar and food coloring on the surface of the candy, making the colors spread out.
It’s a fun and easy way for kids to see how water can dissolve sugar and carry color through the water!
Uncle Sam Mask

Uncle Sam is a character who represents the United States. You’ll often see him in red, white, and blue with a tall hat and stars, especially around the 4th of July. He became a symbol of America during wartime and is now a fun part of our patriotic celebrations.
To make this Uncle Sam mask, we used a paper plate with the center cut out for the face. We added red and white stripes on top of the hat, blue paper stars across the brim, and cotton balls around the edge for his beard. It’s an easy craft that’s fun for kids to wear while celebrating Independence Day!
