This activity is not just a fun activity for your preschooler to do. It also benefits your child in many ways. Your child will develop their creativity and imagination as they decorate their gingerbread man with unique patterns, facial features, and clothing. This craft will also help your preschooler improve their fine motor skills as they use markers to fill in small spaces.
Have your child create themselves as a gingerbread man.
Ask your child questions like:
What color is your hair?
What shirt are you wearing?
What special item can you add to your gingerbread man to make it YOU?
As they answer each question, help them draw the details on their gingerbread man.
OPTION 1: PAPER GINGERBREAD MAN
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Brown craft paper - You can get a roll of brown craft paper from the hardware store or online.
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Tape
Once you have everything ready, the first thing you need to do is roll out a piece of craft paper that is taller than your child.
Next, have your child lay on the paper and trace around their body to make it look like a gingerbread man. You can leave the paper on the floor or tape it to the wall. Then, give your child some dot markers or washable markers to decorate their gingerbread man with a face and all!
Your child can get creative and use various colors and patterns to decorate their gingerbread man. They can also add decorative items like a bowtie, buttons, belt, scarf, etc., using different craft materials. Once your child has decorated their gingerbread man, you can cut it out and hang it on the wall or stick it on the door.
OPTION 2: SALT DOUGH GINGERBREAD MAN
If you’re feeling a bit more crafty, you can make your own gingerbread man out of salt dough. It's an easy and fun activity that your child will enjoy.
To start, combine 1 cup of whole wheat flour with ½ cup of salt and mix them well in a bowl. Then gradually add water until the mixture forms into soft dough. Knead the dough and roll it out until it’s about ½ inch thick.
Use a cookie cutter or a template to cut your gingerbread man shape and bake it at 350°F for 1 hour. Let it cool before decorating with paint, glitter, beads, yarn, buttons, etc.! Your child will have so much fun getting creative.
OPTION 3: DECORATE A REAL GINGERBREAD MAN
Baking your own gingerbread man is a fun and tasty activity.
Get creative with colored icings and various sprinkles.
So, what are you waiting for? Take a break from the regular holiday season activities and try this amazing activity with your preschoolers today!
