Looking for a fun, food-themed Thanksgiving activity to keep your little ones entertained and involved in the holiday festivities? Here’s a creative turkey sandwich project that’s as fun to make as it is to eat! This “turkey” isn’t your traditional bird – it’s a sandwich dressed up like a turkey, full of delicious ingredients that kids will love. Let’s dive into this tasty, hands-on project!

WHAT YOU NEED:
  • Body: Bread (any type your kids love – whole grain, white, or rye)
  • Wings: Turkey meat slices
  • Beak: Cheese slice or yellow pepper piece
  • Eyes: Raisins
  • Snood & Wattle: Red pepper slices or a small strawberry piece
  • Caruncles: Raspberries
  • Beard: Mustard, ketchup, black licorice, or seaweed
  • Feathers: Apple slices (colorful varieties like red, green, and yellow work great!)
  • Legs: Pretzel sticks
  • Poop: Tootsie Roll (optional but funny!)

How to Build Your Turkey Sandwich:
Gather Your Ingredients
Collect all the items you’ll need to make your turkey sandwich. Feel free to substitute with what you have at home or let kids make swaps if they’d like to get creative!

Create Your Turkey
  • Body: Start with your slice of bread as the base.  Shape it into a turkey body if you would like.
  • Wings: Add turkey slices to each side of the bread to form the wings.
  • Beak: Use a small triangle piece of cheese or a small bit of yellow pepper for the turkey’s beak.
  • Eyes: Place two raisins above the beak for the eyes.
  • Snood & Wattle: Use thin strips of red pepper or strawberry slices to create the snood and wattle below and beside the beak.
  • Caruncles: Add small raspberries near the beak for a cute, lumpy detail.
  • Beard: Apply a dab of mustard or ketchup beneath the beak for the beard, or try a piece of black licorice or seaweed for a different texture.
  • Feathers: Place apple slices sticking out from the sides of the bread in a fan shape to look like colorful feathers.
  • Legs: Insert pretzel sticks into the bottom of the bread for legs.

Add the Finishing Touches
Kids can choose to make their turkey a “boy” or “girl” by molding the Tootsie Roll. For a girl turkey, shape it into a swirl; for a boy, shape it like a “J.”

This is a great activity to do alongside this one:

Eat and Enjoy!
Once assembled, let kids marvel at their masterpieces before diving in to enjoy every bite of their turkey sandwich. It’s a delightful way to celebrate the season with a tasty, creative twist!

Have fun, get creative, and Happy Thanksgiving!
