Introducing young children to the wonders of science can be both fun and educational. One such activity that captivates preschoolers' imaginations is the "Disappearing Worms" experiment.
What You Need:
- 5 gummy worms
- 5 cups
- 5 different liquids (examples: water, milk, salt water, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, black coffee, oil, or dish soap)

What to Do:
Prepare the Liquids
Fill each cup with a different liquid. You can choose from a variety of options such as water, milk, salt water, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, black coffee, oil, or dish soap.
Place the Gummy Worms
Carefully place one gummy worm in each cup, ensuring they are fully submerged in the liquid.
Predictions
Fill out the prediction section of the Disappearing Worms Predictions and Results page.
Observation Time
Now comes the exciting part! Leave the cups undisturbed for about an hour and observe what happens to the gummy worms.
Results
Explore the changes in texture, color, and size of the gummy worms. Fill out the Disappearing Worms Predictions and Results page.
What Will Happen?
As the hour progresses, you'll notice that some of the gummy worms start to change. The liquids will interact differently with the gummy worms, causing them to dissolve, swell, or change in appearance.
The Science Behind It:
This experiment is a simple introduction to the concept of solubility, which is the ability of a substance (in this case, the gummy worms) to dissolve in a solvent (the liquids). Different substances have different solubilities in various solvents. For example, water is known as the universal solvent because it can dissolve many substances, while others like oil or dish soap may not dissolve the gummy worms at all.
